I'm talking about the idea that you keep putting receivers in a box. That the only way they can produce is to solely run regular routes and gain 700+ yards, and that's our measure of success.
Charlie Weis doesn't work that way. When he was in New England, Troy Brown put up 1,000+ yards once. That's it. Weis is a guy who likes to spread the field, he LOVES the screen game, and he loves guys with versatility a lot more than he likes guys without. That's why two players he really loved were Daniel Graham and Kevin Faulk, two guys who were anything but spectacular on the stat sheet. It's because Weis likes to run multiple types of plays from the same exact formation and a guy like Graham, for example, can be extremely productive as a blocker in the run game or as a receiver in the passing game.
McCluster isn't Kevin Faulk. But when you're talking Charlie Weis, you get why he's important. And by the way, even if he was Kevin Faulk, you're a moron if you think that's a low expectation to set and most Pats fans would tell you the same.
