I remember my first time running the 40. At one point in time I was the fastest kid in the school (5th and 6th grade [middle school]), but it wasn't until sometime near the end of 9th grade that I ran it for the first time. I hit puberty super late and I was probably 5'2'' 110 lbs. So I run it and clock a 5.4. I was pissed! I assumed I was going to clock a 4.9 or something respectable so I made them clock me three more times and hit 5.3-5.4 every time. At that time I had never touched a weight or played any sports competetively so that was that. Fast forward a few months to the beginning of my sophomore year. I had hit a little growth spurt so I was like 5'4'' or so and had "bulked up" to about 120 lbs. Not only that I was in much better running condition so I clocked a 4.87.
I never ran the 40 again but I'd imagine I could have shaved off another second or so after I got taller and added more leg strength. These days I can run with a good friend of mine that plays college baseball. If I remember correctly he said he runs a 6.9 60 and I run with him after six months of laying on my ass while he's off conditioning 6 days a week. We're neck and neck after the 40 but by 60 he's got about a half-stride on me so I think I'm pretty fast, considering...
