You can't use success as proof of speed and also say speed isn't indicative of being successful.

You can "question" whether or not it was a "true" time all you want. It doesn't matter a damn bit because it was nearly 30 years ago.
But based on the consistently of the timings, the quality of play and the ability of guys to compete at a high level against other similarly timed guys, I'd say they were accurate for the day.
It's downright stupid to imply otherwise, especially since you cannot prove that those times were incorrect.
