Well... if you want to take it to the limit.... it's best to store the battery at 40% charge in a ziplock bag in the refrigerator when not in use. That will ensure long term lifespan.
But seriously, just stick to that charging habit as much as you can, and you will indeed see a difference in overall battery life. What works for me is plugging the phone in every morning when I wake up, instead of when I go to bed. Right after I hit the snooze on my alarm, plug in the phone. Sometimes I have to sit my phone on top of the alarm clock...

That gives me about 1 hour or so of charging time while I get ready for work, which is always sufficient to get my battery to 95-100%. When your phone charges consistently like that, an hour or less is all you need. My phone lasts about 2.5 days with normal use if I take it to the limit.
Whatever phone you get, make a post in the Media Center, and educated folks here will tell you exactly how to fine tune that specific model. That's how we roll yo.
