I like the 45acp - a lot. I've got a couple of 1911's, and like them as well. They're easy to carry (slim) and modern versions are pretty much trouble free. Got a few other .45 models - a Ruger 345, a Springfield XD (the 'Croatian Creation' and a Glock .45 GAP. For a 'beginner' with the .45 I seriously recommend the Glock. YMMV, but that's what I tell 'em. Easy to shoot, pretty much indestructible. The GAP ammo I shoot is a little different than the .45 ACP, it's a propietary round that Glock invented. A little shorter, a little more expensive but it still puts that lovely .45 hole in stuff - and for many folks it seems to be easier to shoot well. As I said, YMMV, but if you're looking at .45's...look at both of 'em.
