The coach has to communicate what kind of guys he wants and then a guy like Kuharich instructs his scouts on what kinds of players to look out for. Also, was there ever any real complaint about Herm not getting the right guys on the field? He gave Surtain the boot, was unafraid to plug Albert in at LT even though many thought he'd play right away at Guard, and wasn't afraid to quickly get Flowers and Carr in there to start. Even though it turned out to be the wrong decision, I think we all were happy to see Niswanger at least get a chance to fail on the field rather than on the practice field.

I think if Peterson didnt' stupidly chase Jared Allen away and the Chiefs had a legit Defensive Coordinator, the Chiefs could have had a really dominant defense as soon as 2009.
Also, people forget that Kuharich was a complete disaster in New Orleans. Let's not rule out the importance of the coach and the GM being on the same page.
