I asked my HS teacher, a philosophy major, his view on God/Religion. His answer has pretty much stuck with me my entire life now.

His Answer: The biggest issue he has with it is that religion does not reward good behavior and morality. The whole schtick with the bible is to teach good morals and to love your neighbor and the lord. Those are the teachings of Jesus Christ.

But loving the lord trumps all. You can be a person of outstanding Charector. You can be a person who never "sins". You never told a lie, committed adultry or murder. You're the model human being.

But if you don't follow/love the Christian God, none of that matters. The bible teaches you to be a good person. You can be the best person in the world. But if you don't love their god, you're going to hell.

So, ima be the best person I can be. But i'm not going to sit here and throw money at a church, or stress myself to follow every teaching to a "T". I'm not going to sit here and study the bible and put my faith in man. If god does exist, he'll know that i was a person of high morality. If he lets me in, great. If not, at least I'll know I lived a good life.

I'm what most would call a Christian, and I don't think you would burn in hell for leading a good life.
The overbearing nature of the general message that is taught by organized religion drives away so many people. I haven't been to church, a whole lot, or in along time, but I can tell you that there are some that are not filled with extremists.
