The Randy Moss deal worked out for them because they were a veteran team with great leadership and one of the best QBs in the game.
The team dynamic has changed substantially since that time especially on defense, where that veteran core has all been traded or released.
The only remaining vet presense to speak of is Wilfork, and e doesn't strike me as that leader taht can help keep a problem child like Hayneworth in line.
This trade is a huge risk/huge reward deal.

I agree, except that it's not THAT big of a risk. They gave up a late round pick. At the first sign of trouble, you cut him and move on. It if works, they look like geniuses. If it doesn't, they aren't hurt too badly.
It's like betting $10 into a $10,000 pot. Even if your chances of winning the pot are slim, why wouldn't you?
