Cassel is a smart guy. I think he's bright. He works hard and has the heart/desire to excel. He just often can't see the whole field very well, and he can't make quick successful decisions on a consistent basis. I see wide open receivers all the time get passed up in favor of a checkdown.
As far as his arm, it's not strong. Not the weakest arm I've seen in the league though. His accuracy can be good at times. His mobility is decent. He's about middle of the road. If Kerry Collins and Michael Vick had a baby somehow, it would grow up with the mobility of Matt Cassel, but it would have a better arm.
I would like to know what perception you all would have of Cassel if he was 23 years old. Would you be willing to cut him more slack in hopes that he could improve? A poll has probably been done before asking this very question, and it's totally hypothetical and pointless, but it would interest me.
Let me answer this question with this thought.
I was a big believer in Mark Sanchez's potenetial coming out of USC, and was one of the loudest proponents of the drfating him.
At this point in his development, if I were a jet fan, I'd say it's time to shit or get off the pot.
He's not improving, and it's getting to be that time when you have to think about replacing him.
That is how I would feel about Matt Cassel if he were a 25 year old QB in his thrid year.
