You're not going to get a 'prime year', established coach at this point in the program. You've also established a nice little reputation as a coach-killer over the last several years (I've heard both Dan Patrick and Scott VanPelt make this point lately), making you pretty far down on the list for this season's 'hot' coach.
Well the good news is that there's a new 'hot' coach every single season and most of them are fairly interchangeable. So why not bring in a guy like Fulmer or Barnett, guys that know how to win games and don't care if they are walking into potential career suicide as its likely their last job anyway?
You really don't think Fulmer could turn KU into a much MUCH better job in 3 or 4 years? You essentially bring him in as a short-term stopgap and safe rebuilder. He won't come with nearly the risks of a some of these assistants and 2nd tier head coaches you're looking at (i.e. Gill) and you're far more likely to end up improving KU as a job for the next hire. Maybe then the 'name' assistant that year gives KU a much longer look.
Given the state of the program, bringing in an older coach with a strong pedigree seems like a solid idea to me.

I don't necessarily hate that line of thinking. Not the best case scenario, but it would surely avoid us the epic dumb that was Turner Gill.
