He never said I am going to commit suicide. But many in here acted as if he had gun in hand. Based off of no facts, just assumptions. Most people that commit suicide don't announce it, they just do it. Especially men. Calling law enforcement may not have been the best idea was all I'm saying.
He made a post. Maybe he didn't respond because he felt embarrassed. Maybe the thread went way beyond his control. But let's just jump the gun(np) and call the coppers to bang on his door and probably scare the living shit out of his family at 2 in the morning, right? That's sounds like a great plan.

He says he's thinking about suicide, says he has been for a while, lists reasons to support his beliefs, combine that with it being the holiday season and you have a recipe for disaster.
If anything at all it brought to a light the situation for his family to see. If it's out in the open then maybe he can get help.
The messed up thing is you denounce it as a bad move based on the same lack of information. Difference is Phil acted on the side of caution. Realistically, what could be the worst outcome of the cops banging on his door: at the least a minor inconvenience at the worst they pull him in and he gets help. Neither of which are bad things.
Now let's examine your philosophy of do nothing: the worst that could happen is he could be bleeding out on the carpet until his wife or kids find him.
When you compare the two the logic of Phil's decision speaks for itself.
