Chat windows are all messed up in space combat. They won't open at all unless you force them open (it involves hitting enter and the arrow at the top left that open/closes the chat window). I opened mine several times in order to ascertain how much xp I was getting from the various bonus objectives in underlevel missions.

Sidenote: if you don't know, there are certain daily objectives in some of the space missions that offer a large amount of xp and credits. Like blowing up the communications array underneath the Outpost in the 2nd or 3rd mission you get. Many of these can only be done at 50, with Proton Torpedoes, but some of them, like the comm array, can be done with missiles (it takes @16, and gives somewhere around 2500 xp/credits - which is nuts at the low levels that you get the mission...). You can also blow up the bridge on the main objective ship in the Makum Te Assualt (however that's spelled).

So that's why/how I had the chat window open in the space missions...

But you'll never see your chat window open otherwise.
