Yeah, I worked on armoring, hilts, mods and enhancements a couple weeks ago. That was bad, but not nearly as bad as trying to get the critical version of the prototype recipe and then the endowment version of the artifact recipe. And then you have to get that recipe to crit to get the augment slot. It makes my head hurt.
And, honestly, at this point in the game there's really little reason to spend all this time and effort on the crafting, because the dailies, hm flashpoints and, particularly) PvP all give better items in the end. PvP is purportedly the easiest route of all, and you can kit yourself in gear at 60 valor that's better than you get from operations.
However, I don't want to turn level 50 into a grind, so I'm sticking to the path laid-out by my class story, and continuing through the bonus quests series' as I had always planned. So for me at least, it is worth the time to do the crafting (which really isn't any time, since I can do it while I'm questing or at work, which is I think the genius of crafting in this game...), because it's far-and-away the best equipment available without grinding. The difference it made for my level 50, going from blue level 47 mods/gear to purple level 48-49 was just monumental.
But if you want the faster, easier path, don't bother with it, and just go straight to grinding.
