If no exit was reasonable (i.e. Martin had Zimmerman on the ground) then deadly force can be used, it is pretty clear law.
It becomes much more murky if they were both standing when the shot was fired....
The fact that Zimmerman thought MArtin had something in his waist band may be helpful to Zimmerman's claims (he told 911 he thought he thought martin 'had something' )
Basically to be justified in using deadly force Zimmerman should be in fear of his life, and not being able to get away is a huge bonus.
