BCS has only been around since 1998. I've no problem with Saul taking pride in Sugar Bowl wins or Orange Bowl wins, but they have only been part of the BCS since the existence of the BCS. It's like a guy that was part of a Navy Amphibious Scouts and Raiders and claiming to be a Navy SEAL. There might be a historical basis to the claim, but it is, in fact, inaccurate.
The selection may have been as rigorous, perhaps even more so, but if I recall correctly, the bowl selections were more closely aligned with league membership rather than the process today that is certainly different, and many would argue, flawed.
That said, the reigning national champion didn't win their conference, nor did they even win their division of SEC. The irony seems to be lost on many.
