To each his own. I was fascinated by it the entire time, even though I readily admit its script failures.
I think it helps to be a true "Alien" nerd. I mean the first film, not the entire Alien universe of films.
This entire movie was spawned by one little 1 or 2 minute shot from the first Alien film.
