I'd say he has a contact hitter's stroke (as you said, compact, short to the ball, good balance, good plate coverage) but the ball carries off his power like a power guy.
That's a great combo for a guy to hit .300 while slugging .500.
It's still somewhat shocking, as before 2011 he was viewed as a great glove who MIGHT hit .265 with decent pop for a catcher.
I think Wil Myers is an instant star, too - and apparently he and Salvador are really close (Perez credits Myers with touching off his hitting surge last year).
