Dalton actually was pretty good as Bond; he certainly played him closest to the Bond of the Fleming books. His main problems were that they weren't doing very well updating Bond to the post-Cold War times, his movies were kind of iffy at times, and he looked goofy in a tux.
Connery defined the role, though. Fleming - who didn't like him at first - was so impressed by Connery's portrayal that he actually the tailored the character to him in later books, including among other things that Bond is, in fact, Scottish. (Well, half Scottish; his mother was Swiss.) Brosnan was good, but he was recreating a role, not creating one, and being kind of thin, he lacked much of the physicality of the role.
Craig, on the other hand, has that in spades. I have no problem with him.
