I have seen a lot of passages or verses in sacred texts that can be used to validate ridiculously hateful behavior. The Old Testament, The Qur'an, you can dig up whatever you want really. So people who want to do these horrible things like burn down churches, persecute missionaries and so on, they can try to validate themselves by claiming that they are following the will of God. I don't believe that to be true. I don't believe that a supreme being would try to inspire you to hatred. I'm pretty much agnostic with heavy Buddhist leanings. I don't and won't pretend to know what's going on spiritually. But that really makes no sense to me.

So. Follow the letter of the "law" as it is written in a text that is well over a thousand years old, that has been translated multiple times? Or read the text and try to get a sense of what it's all about?

The law is written in your heart.
