Because at this point longevity of his career for the team means absolutely nothing. Maximize value/production. If he gets hurt, who cares?
Set-up men, even really good ones, aren't that hard to find; viable starters are.
Finally, relievers are up and throwing quite a bit, so it's not like this is a low-stress situation physically. Going to a set, five-day schedule might, ironically enough, help to preserve his career.
