I know they are that close. 100 years from now we should have a fully functioning fusion powered grid.. assuming something better doesn't pop up. But in 20-30 years I fully expect to see prototypes in place.
We could easily have a prototype in place in 8-10 years if we wanted to spend our way to one... but that's risky. You tend to push the tech instead of letting the tech lead. That drives up prices and leads to a ton of inefficiency and possibly even taking the wrong paths entirely.
