Of course you're right that they should be careful and that was idiotic, but I don't think they'd yet encountered zombies that "played dead."

I know what you're saying. I read the graphic novel too. Those were introduced when Rick goes to Atlanta the first time if I remember correctly. And I can see why for story they may be doing that, but to me it's a little late in the game for something like that.
If you had survived as long as they have, then it's because your #1 rule is to be careful. To me that means that anything that looks dead, or is almost dead gets a spike in the brain, simple as that.
Rule #2 - Double tap!
Shit, even when they first cleared the yard, when Rick went to close the gate and Carl was being a marksman with a handgun, at the end of that scene they showed one zombie trying to get up again. If it's me, everything thats on the ground gets one more spike just to be sure.
