I noted that it wasn't their money going anywhere. He reimbursed the U for the tab. I suppose American Express (or whoever) could be upset, but I doubt they are.
Again, I'd have zero problem with the guy being fired. What he did was beyond stupid. I'm not sure why you've chosen to entrench yourself into such an angle, but, hey, go for it.

Only because he got caught and because school officials didn't tolerate it. Otherwise it was very much the tax and donation money being used.
People are acting like he planned to pay it back. And even if he did, that is still a gross misuse of company resources.
