I think some of this perception might come from the 2004 election. In 2004, the Bush campaign did what Obama is doing in 2012. They chose to highlight divisive issues in an effort to excite their own base. They sacrificed, at least to some extent, an appeal to independents in exchange for trying to expand the base vote. Obama is doing the same thing right now with his war on women initiative and his Bain is the devil (ie war on capitalism) approach.
Yeah, it was sneaky of Obama supporters to coax Republican political figures to express their views about women's issues in a completely moronic fashion. Now that was a good Jedi mind trick!
