I've probably performed over 2000 root canals in my 20 years of practice, and have had maybe 10 people that had trouble getting numb. Those people were all severely abscessed (swollen) when we did it as well. Root canals are easy as pie, just let the dentist know that you'd rather be number than not. You may be numb for 5 hours, but you wont feel shit.
My last one I had to had a "tap" in my jawbone, below the tooth. But the procedure itself was simple and painless.
