FETUSES. It required human embryos.
There's two types of stem cell - embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells, neither of which come from fetuses.
The VAST majority of successful stem cell research right now is coming from adult stem cells, which are readily available.
You're absolutely right. It shouldn't even remain an issue.
