The democrats have built a coalition of voters that would otherwise hate each other if they didn't have a "D" in common.
They've essentially built a European-style multi-party social democracy within their PARTY.
The Republicans are in for a hard fight if not outright doomed.
This is interesting, as the Dems "big tent" was seen as a weakness for so long in that it made their "message" difficult to communicate and control. In addition, it was seen as a coalition of extreme/fringe groups that was out of touch with mainstream America. Somehow, though, they seem to have made it work.
