Bad parenting had nothing to do with Zimmerman taking on a form of vigilantism that he knew was police responsibility.
The police don't come on time to prevent a crime...they more often come aftewards—when it's too late. They can investigate then.
To my knowledge Z turned back toward his vehicle when Trayvon surprised him.
