If it were just a matter of not forcing churches to perform SSM it would be pretty easy to resolve. But what happens when a private religious organization (e.g. a catholic hospital) wants to provide private insurance coverage for employees and their spouses? Will they be forced to provide it for same sex spouses or will they be allowed to use their own view of marriage to define their benefit program?
It would be a case some people would instantly start trying to bring against religious organizations. I can think of two or three here that would want it to happen, and it wouldn't have much to do with gay-rights. It would mostly be an anti-religion thing.
