To perpetrate this shit, you need two elements in place:

(1.) The mindset to do so.
(2.) The opportunity to do so.

Assault weapons and semi-automatics and huge magazines create a canyon's worth of opportunity for somebody willing to do so, to the point where (2.) isn't even a barrier anymore.

I'm fully in favor of having a comprehensive discussion on this issue, but these guns are a part of the issue.
