Why or I guess "How" is the NFL considered to be a non-profit organization?

How is this possible when they're the only professional sports team that has this status (as far as I know - MLB, NBA, NHL do not) ??? This is a league that generates more than $9B a year in revenue.

If this has been explained in the NFL game fixing thread, sorry - I don't really feel like searching for the answer in that thread. I was just having a conversation w/ my dad and he mentioned this to me. He also said when opposing teams come into town and rent hotels etc, the league can write that off as well as well as other "travel" expenses.

Is this true?
