I don't understand what possible reason Hunt would have for keeping a "powerless" GM. It doesn't save him any money. Paying the guy to do nothing is just as big a waste of money as paying him to go away.
There are only 2 reasonable scenarios imo. Pioli will remain GM, or he'll be fired. This neutered GM notion just doesn't fit.
