Like most belief system, it has it's own diverse branches.
As I understand atheism it is a rejection of the existence of "gods" or God. In other words it is the belief that God can not exist. There is nothing in Buddhist beliefs that has anything to do with an afterlife or a god. It is irrelevant to the teachings. It is viewed as unknowable, which is agnostic in nature.
