It's originally based on a short story called "Fire in the Hole" by Elmore Leonard, about a US Marshall named Raylen Givens who returns to Kentucky, where he grew up. It's hard to describe exactly what it is, basically a tough rogue-ish federal marshall who has a talent for irritating both criminals and the marshall service. A pain in everybody's ass. There's a lot more to it, of course.
It's a great, great show. Timothy Olyphant plays Givens, and he's even better than he was in Deadwood (he was Seth Bullock).
It's starting season 4 tonight, actually.
