There are plenty of people in this country that have problems or are uncomfortable with gay people. It has a lot to do with how they are raised, and usually revolves around religion. They aren't necessarily bad people that should be condemned. A slow understanding approach, and honest discussion is the way to go about it. You are going from one witch hunt to the next. You can't expect people change their views overnight. If we just need to give programmed responses then go ahead and write a script so we don't have to hear back lash about a similar story every ****ing day. What the guy said is stupid, but the response will be every bit as stupid.
No, the response will be overblown, but it comes from a group of people who have to fight bigotry and prejudice every day. His right to be ignorant and rude is not equal to their right to fair treatment. I agree he shouldn't be branded for life or anything, but it is reasonable for people to protest when someone stands in front of a mic and degrades them.
