One thing that separates Daniel Day Lewis from other great actors is the material he chooses. He picks good dramatic films. Not so with some of the others. Good acting is about being a good fake and creating illusion on film. He's one of the best at that since he was able to convince people that they were actually seeing Honest Abe up there on the silver screen. No wonder he was canonized by Hollywood.
I read some interview about DDL where he has admitted that he imerses himself so deeply into the character he's portraying at that time that it literally takes him a couple of months to fully shed himself of that personna. I found that interesting, and a bit disturbing on some small level.
