Alex Smith is a very smart, game manager. He is not going to win many games, but hes not going to lose any. He has a philosophy that a punt, or taking a sack is better than a turnover. He is a great leader. He is not kaep, or aaron rodgers, he is alex smith, he is closer to being a matt hasselbeck type than being elite. Yes, whole lot of sunshine and rainbows. Im sorry im not like you, i do not care about what the select few on this boards think of me, or my opinion of Alex SMith, or me in general. You seem to care far more about that than i do.
Here is what you need to get through your thick skull, we aren't happy with what you claim is Alex Smith's upside.

It's not as if we haven't seen this before. This fanbase has seen YEARS AND YEARS of this kind of QB---the smart "game manager" that thinks that a punt or taking a sack is better than a turnover. The "great leader" type that is not a franchise QB.

All through the 90's we had a great defense paired with exactly this kind of QB (with the possible exception of a broken-down Montana). DeBerg and Steve Bono were prime examples of this kind of QB. We went 13-3 with Bono in 1995. DeBerg had a magical year where he threw 24 TD passes and 4 ints. WE HAVE SEEN THIS MOVIE BEFORE AND KNOW HOW IT ENDS---without a SB trophy.

To us, this seems like yet another administration giving up on getting a franchise guy the minute they walk in the door. So, yes it's partially about history, but it's also about your boy---we've seen him before and we don't see playoff appearances and a full stadium as an acceptable end goal. So what if he's better than Damon Huard or Matt Cassel? He's still not good enough to realistically create a Super Bowl run without a firestorm of serendipity.
