You didn't. Financial aid goes to the student. In fact, most Universities deposit the money into student accounts used to pay for tuition directly. I want to hear your story about how the parent is getting their hands on it. I'm not saying it's completely impossible, but I'd like to hear about the mechanism allowing it to happen.
Where do I say that "financial only going to tuition"? Of course, I didn't.
[In fact, I had that setup as an undergrad (as do many students). I received a check for scholarship money beyond tuition. HOWEVER, this money only came to me AFTER tuition had been paid out of the account. It's a fairly common setup.]
