This Smith detractor is a Smith detractor because of the price paid. He'd have been fine as a free agent. I think literally any QB who isn't Matt Cassel could get this team 8-8 (including probably half the rookies in this draft class, and I don't mean just the name or two at the top). And if that's your goal, well, a vet is a fine direction to go. But why in the world throw away 2nd round picks to do it for the kind of guy that you can get for nothing?
