The armed guard at Columbine got shot so there is a circumstance where I can legitimately say the would-be shooter might not have been shot before he caused deaths. I'm not making this into some ban gun argument. Do you disagree that if the shooter had a gun that the same result (no victims died) would be the same as if he had a knife?
