You either need a great QB as a force multiplier or a decent QB where you're just flat better everywhere else.
Because look at who you're chasing right now. The 49ers ARE great everywhere and very well could have that force multiplying QB. That's your rabbit - good luck catching him with the 14th best QB in the league and lateral movements on key positions for a 2-14 squad.
Obviously you can hope for the "any given Sunday" thing to happen and you just flat play better than your opponent on that weekend....for 4 consecutive weekends. I guess that could happen.
But I wouldn't count on it.
This team needs a HR swing to make the leap and Alex Smith/Eric Fisher is not a HR swing. Mike DeVito is not a HR swing. Even guys like Avery and Smith - who I like aren't true HR swings. Those are the supplemental parts that you use to fill around your developing football team.
But we've traded a high value 2nd rounder and are now seemingly content with moving sideways with 1.1 - that's just not going to work.

Eh, I'm not real hungup on Devito. They made moves to fill holes. I still think they obviously believe the draft is the place to find the stars.
Based on what i've gathered, they think the star power is pretty much here, but has underperformed. I think they feel the developing football pillars are here and they seem to be thinking Joeckel or Fisher can be a pillar.
If we do draft either of them at 1, they better be.
I'm probably more excited about Alex Smith than anyone here, but I think he's vastly underrated.
