Yes, we really were. Strong D and STs... Harbaugh and Co. kept the offense simple while our offense was evolving (and was far more a work in progress than our D was). Our run game in short yardage situations was also really shaky.
Jim actually conformed a bit to the Mike Singletary approach of running a heavy-set formation to WILL our way on the ground to the first down. It failed a lot last season... failed a lot the last few seasons. All we managed to do was add those big bodies to clog up our own RBs.
On passing downs when we would get penalized and end up in 3rd and 20, we would send the TEs and WRs on clear-outs... throw to the RB over the middle... pick up 10-15 yards... and send in our stud punter to play the field position game. That's just how we rolled... because we figured Lee would boom the punt for great yardage and then our D would force them to punt it back.
