The Chiefs need to be competitive, and you're not getting that with Carson Palmer, Kevin Kolb, Matt Flynn, Geno Smith, or Matt Barkley. You're getting it from Alex Smith.
Build a team around him for a year, then see what you can do to get The Guy.

The only reason Alex Smith even became available from SF was because Colin Kaepernick turned out to be far more than the "solid backup" first thought. Once the 49ers got rid of Jimmy Raye as OC, Alex Smith became a very different QB. His rating went over 90 and his winning percentage took his team to the playoffs. Along the way he beat Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers and Matt Ryan in playoff level games...and he did it with lesser WR talent than he will have here this coming season.
He may prove to be only a one or two year stop gap but I would be very surprised if that were the case. He is a guy who can take a team deep into the playoffs, and I expect him to do just that.
