I said "intellect". You can be savvy and know how to identify a great stock market trade but still lack the balls to commit your money to it.
The intellect is not the problem. He studies. He understands the playbook inside and out. He assists in the game planning. He understands his opponent's defenses. He reads pre-snap defenses exceedingly well. Alex's audible's was one reason Gore was so effective rushing.
He can't take complete advantage of that intellect because as you said, he makes safe decisions. He is risk averse and isn't willing to take a gamble when the game is on the line and calls for taking a gamble. He plays it safe to the last whistle.
There are a few exceptions to this and the Saints game is THE exception tha proves the rule.
