Thinking he is going to be an elite or near-elite QB can only be based on hope and belief.

I certainly can say we gave up too much. That's the point of watching a sport, right? Forming your opinions and discussing them. We gave up too much for Alex Smith unless he becomes a near-elite QB and leads the Chiefs to playoff wins, or unless the defense and running game become so good, he is able to manage the team to playoff wins.

I don't have FAITH those things are going to happen, but I won't be sad if they do. I just have to see it to believe it this time.

Simply making the playoffs with no positive upward momentum (hints at being able to do more than that) would leave me pretty neutral. If the hypothetical I posed actually happened, I would actually be incredibly disappointed, unless Dorsey/Reid used it as motivation to upgrade the QB spot.
The whole reason I was excited that Alex Smith was coming here, was because of the running game. jamaal Charles had what 1500 yards last year? With the qb situation, and the right side of your line being garbage, that is pretty impressive. And the truth be told, Alex Smith when he was the qb of the 49ers last season until he got hurt, they had the number one rushing attack in all of football. Those numbers can translate because he knows how to audible to the correct play. 3rd downs, deep passes, severe weakness. But the run game, and protecting the ball in itself will translate to better defense, and probably field position. those are at least worth 3-4 wins easily. Alex Smith is going to have to do a little more carrying than he is used to, thats where players like travis kelce, and fasano are going to have to come into play, and baldwin is going to have to make some kind of contribution......
