The same sex marriage debate isn't really about banning anything. If you ban guns, you take away the ability for a person to legally possess guns. If you "ban" same sex marriage, you don't take away the ability for a person to form lifelong commitments to a partner of the same sex.
"Banning" same sex marriage is more like saying we're not going to give a tax break and a host of other special government benefits (which, to be fair, are substantial) to people who possess guns.
