Ninety-nine percent of closers are throwers, not pitchers. They rely on velocity and blow their arms out every appearance. As they age, like all pitchers, their velocity declines, and 93 is a hell of a lot easier to hit than 99. Since almost none of them have tertiary pitches, unless they have an offering that is truly dominant (Hoffman's change, Rivera's cutter), it's harder to keep hitters off balance, especially when they see you often and you can't overwhelm them with power.
