Most tornadoes of course move to the NE or due E. Guys like Samaras needed to be able to get in front of storms to put down their research probes and then haul tail. From what I hear, the turn in the storm was sudden, sharp, and fast (which usually does not happen). From the pic I could see Samaras' crew being up there to get in front.

Non data-collecting chasers will either try to be due east with a visual and a good road dropping south if they have to, or stay to the south and follow along beside it.

The north to north east side of the tornado is usually where you have some of the worst rain and hail in a storm. I don't chase for research and I've been on the north side once, and I prefer not to do that again. I usually try to stick due south to a bit south east.
