The Royals were named after the American Royal. Which as you may know, is a huge deal in this city and has been for eons. I assume this is why Steadman was considering it as well.
Kauffman decided on the name "Royals" to honor the city's heritage. And he put the fountains in at his own expense - $8M - again, to honor the city's heritage of having fountains. Royals is a perfect name.
