In the past, the mantra of LucasFilm has been that if it didn't occur in the films, it wasn't "canon". So, if that directive remains, everything that's ever happened in the EU is not only irrelevant, it never existed in the Star Wars universe.
I don't recall if it was this thread or another similar thread, but there have been some pretty dopey things happen in the EU that will hopefully never see screen time. Some of those books have been downright awful.
